What to consider about when making a hotel reservation online?

I am going to book hotels for my Thailand trip next month, I've found some reservation websites already, but their room rates are quite varied. I wonder should I just make booking with the one offering the lowest rates. Are there any other issues that should be taken into consideration. What to consider about when making a hotel reservation online?
In my experience, it's Ok to book one with the lowest price. The prices are veried because the agents get different discount from the hotels - the more roomnights they sell, the bigger discount they get and they pass the bigger discount to customers to gain their competitive edge. After booking online, you will get reply email from the agent. You can make sure what you really want from them before making a payment.

Don't forget to review comment from their customers, this will give you some idea of how good or bad they are.

Have a great time in Thailand. What to consider about when making a hotel reservation online?
As many have said already. Check the cancellation policy. Not the hotel's but the reservation agency. There is more flexibility in options when booking directly through the hotel but the reservation agencies have far better deals. Sometimes it will not be for the exact thing you are looking for but it could be a significant savings.

For example I once booked a nonsmoking suite on a high floor with a king sized bed but instead I could only get a mid-level floor with 2 queen sized beds. I could have gotten exactly what I wanted going directly through the hotel but I saved A LOT of money going through asiarooms.com instead for something that was close enough to what I really wanted.

I have successfully used asiarooms.com multiple times (see their cancellation policy here: http://www.asiarooms.com/faq/#cancellati鈥?/a> to book month long vacations in Thailand. I've found them to be quick and reliable. I've never had to cancel a room or change hotels through them so I can't comment on their handling of those types of situations.
Along with the cancellation info the previous answer said, make sure they have the amenities you want. If you want certain things for the hotel to have, double check those. Also, if possible, call the hotel directly, not their 1-800 number to make sure that what the website states is accurate. Cheap is okay, but not always the best. If you can go with a chain or common hotel brand.
Firstly I would not use any that ask you for credit card details before they can confirm, unless it is an instant confirmation. Use those that will offer confirmed accommodation before wanting any payment.

Secondly I would not use any that want all the money in advance.

I use those that only want 1 night deposit and then you don't pay anything else until about 2 weeks before you arrive.
I think you should choose the best hotel reservation, here is a review of top 5 hotel reservation websites, you can choose one of them.

you need tp check their policy of cancellation.

Is it practicable to live in a hotel in Newark for 5 days sightseeing in NYC?

Soon I want to go to NYC with my parents, and we are looking for a hotel. As hotels (and parking) are so expensive in the city, someone told me we should find a hotel in Newark instead. Is that practicable if you are planning to do sightseeing every day? How long does the train ride into NYC take and do the trains go all day (so that we are flexible with the times)? Can anyone recommend a good, not too expensive hotel? Is it practicable to live in a hotel in Newark for 5 days sightseeing in NYC?
If you guys don`t care about your accommodations, and just want something clean and simple, why don`t you stay in a hostel right in manhattan? My friends and I always stay at The Big Apple Hostel right in Times Square (45th and Broadway). It's only $37/night per person, and you're right in the thick of things. It's clean, and functional with private rooms and 4 bathrooms to a floor. It also has a nice common area, and patio out back. You won't really be spending much time in the hostel anyways, and by staying here, you'll save so much on cabs, or so much time not having to take subways back into the city.

I'm going there for the 6th time this weekend and can't wait! Trust me, you will love it! If you have any questions, feel free to message me! :)Is it practicable to live in a hotel in Newark for 5 days sightseeing in NYC?
It gets the job done , but why don't you stay in Brooklyn or Queens, the prices are comparable to Newark. With a weekly metrocard you can go all over NYC (Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island, Bronx) Staying in NJ you will need a metrocard plus add the trip from NJ to NY. You also don't really get the NYC feeling. I will suggest not to stay in NJ and stay in NYC(Brooklyn, Queens
yeah that is a good idea actually you will be saving a whole lot of money! newark is close to the george washington bridge which is the bridge to get into manhattan. its pretty close. i no this because i go from manhatten into to new jersey to visit family. newark is really close and practicable.
no, it's not practical to stay in Newark, because Newark isn't really that close to NYC. for me, close would have to be right across the Hudson, and anything beyond that is too far. you would be spending at least 30 minutes each way, and you won't have the flexibility of having an open schedule, since you'd always be thinking about ';catching the last train';. also, if you stayed in Manhattan, or even within subway distance, like in Brooklyn or Queens, you could always decide to go back to the hotel to rest and then go out again later. it's much better to do this if you could even walk to the hotel. remember also that in the current economic downturn hotel rates in NYC have been dropping like flies, and you can get great deals now if you look hard enough.

and to the poster who recommended going over the George Washington Bridge to get to Newark, this makes no sense at all since you would be going in the opposite direction. Newark is closest to the Holland Tunnel, but even from there it is still about 10 miles west into New Jersey.

even if you have to pay a little more, stay in Manhattan. you won't regret it. it's worth the convenience.
This is a very good idea economic wise. A lot of travelers, who choose not to stay in the City, stayed in Newark an took the train into the City.

Now, the trip to and from NYC by commuter train can take anywhere between 10 to 15 minutes if you're staying at a hotel near Newark Airport. If you staying at hotel in downtown Newark, the trip is a lot short (about 5 to 10 minutes), plus you have a the choice to take either NJ Transit or the PATH train.

Depending on your budget, may I recommend the link below.

Good luck

What are the risks of booking a hotel and lying about the number of guests that are staying?

Most hotels add at least $10 per extra person beyond 2 per night. What happens if I make the reservation under the assumption that only 2 people will be staying, when I actually plan on having 4 people in one room. Will the Hotel fine me if I get caught, or will they simply add the extra fee for each additional guest to my bill? What are the risks of booking a hotel and lying about the number of guests that are staying?
I would not worry about it as long as you are all not obnoxious and bring attention and complaints to yourselves. It's perfectly acceptable to have 2 people staying the night, yet bring over more guests to be in there. You can tell them that only 2 of them are spending the night, and they usually won't care.

On road trips, my friends and I would typically pack 8 people into a room meant for 4, and there were never any problems since we only went to the hotel to pass out.

You have a very slim chance of getting caught, but even if they care, the most that will happen is a fee for the extra guests. What are the risks of booking a hotel and lying about the number of guests that are staying?
unless its a very small hotel or you are very rowdy asllmost no chance at all.
They don't check...Believe me, I do it all the time.
I would let them know how many people you have staying in the room. It is not just about your money, there are other things involved.

If a hotel is evacuated, for whatever reason, the police and other safety people need to know a true count of how many people are in the facility. If there were to be some sort of terrible accident, a hotel's insurance will not cover unreported guests, and the hotel has no financial obligation to the family of an unreported guest. These are things to consider.

I do pay attention to what guests say and what they do. If they tell me they are going to have 1 person in the room and 2 enter the door, we charge them for the additional person. Then, when they check out, we make it a point to let them know that they have been charged for the additional person. Pretty much we call attention to their dishonesty. Maybe if we embarrass them in some way, they will be honest the next time. A lie, even as little as the number of people may seem insignificant to you, but it is a crime (defrauding an innkeeper) and it is punishable under law. Am I going to file criminal charges against you for this type of lie, no, but I will charge you for the additional people in your room, and I will call you on your lie, hopefully embarrassing you for your behavior just a little.

Bottom line, do you want people thinking you are a dishonest person, probably not. If you were evacuated in the middle of the night due to something such as a firestorm, and we did a head count, thinking that there are 62 people in the hotel, but because you lied and told us that there were 2 people in your room instead of 4, we don't realize that we are 2 people short, and Mr. and Mrs. Jones, the elderly couple asleep in one of the rooms, dies in a tragic accident, if you can live with your lie and the possibility of what could happen, go ahead, lie and teach your children how to be dishonest too.

Before you slam me, I know the scenario at the end is far fetched. But we have had to evacuate our facility during a firestorm and fortunately, the fires missed us (by about 250 feet) but the potential for tragedy is there, why risk it.
they probably will never know - as long as you dont make a lot of noise. Just when checking in - only have you and 1 other person at the counter - have your friends/family wait in the car

How much does a maid in a hotel or retirement home make on average?

I'm searching for a new job, Does anyone know how much a maid in a retirement home or Hotel makes? How much does a maid in a hotel or retirement home make on average?
well it would depend on the area and the hotel and the type of hotel you were looking into. I dont live in a touristy area but i work for the hilton family and they make around 8 dollars an hour plus tips. The more upscale place you go the more likely you are to get tips and more per hour. If your talking like a motel 6 then maybe 6 pr 7 an hour dont count on tips and usually when you work with the elderly you will make more it just depends on the minimum wage in your area.

  • Doing a weeks work experience in a hotel waitressing, how can I make a good impression?

I want to be the best damn waitress they ever had!

    But how?

Any tips?Doing a weeks work experience in a hotel waitressing, how can I make a good impression?
Smile, Look great, Think outside the box but do your job at the same time, get to work 15 minutes early (no more earlier then that), be a team player in the sense that you want to help other waitresses or staff when you can but without losing focus on the job you are there to do - one example would be, you see a few empty dishes or cups at the end of a table that is not yours and you are going to the kitchen anyways, as you keep walking to the back, grab them and take them to the kitchen. They will notice.

Read the menu before going to work the first time, get to know everything on the menu. Listen to other customers reaction to their meals... when another customer comes in and says ';So what is good today?'; Try to give them your knowledge of what you hear others saying about certain meals... Example ';oh a few people have ordered the fish today and said they really enjoyed it';... but give them real info don't just make it up. If they enjoy something that you suggested after they asked, they will thank you with a nice tip (hopefully). But at least try to know the menu... it will help you so much.

Personally I think you are going to do a great job, you have the right attitude and I wish whoever you had to impress could see you preparing and thinking about ways to do the best job here on Yahoo Answers.

Good Luck and let us know how it goes!

Take Care.Doing a weeks work experience in a hotel waitressing, how can I make a good impression?
What a wonderful attitude you have, be on time, look nice. Give superior service, make certain the customers are served promptly, if something is not ready in a timely manner let the guest know that there has been a delay and the you have not forgotten them.

I eat out a lot, dine really, I go out to relax, have someone else cook and enjoy the food. I do not mind waiting if things get backed up in the kitchen, but when that happens I would like more bread, maybe more wine, I do not want to have to flag the waitress/waiter to get it.
Smile, show up early for your shift, never just stand around doing nothing (ask ';can i help with anything?';). Make sure you can carry the tray without having dishes slide around. Be fast at getting stuff out to people and at clearing dishes. Waitressing can be really difficult, I wish you well!
Turn up for work on time or a little early every day.

Always look smart and presentable, hair and clothes neat and tidy.

Do things without being asked (like clear tables etc)

Smile and be friendly to everyone even if they're annoying.

And remember the cutomer is always right!
Make sure you are well groomed, smile, listen and stay attentive to the customer's needs.

Do you just leave the laundry in the bag they provide, and housekeeping takes it? Or, do you call the front desk and asked to have it picked up? Also, do you need to be in the room when they return the cleaned laundry? Thanks! How does having laundry done at a hotel work?
It depends on the type of property but with the exception of extended stay hotels, if they are leaving you a bag in the closet, it is for dry cleaning. All you need to do is drop it off at the front desk around 8am (pickup is usually between 8 and 9) and it will be back the same day, usually around 6 or 7. They will typically put it in the room for you at bigger properties or at very least, leave a voice message alerting to its return.

DO NOT leave it outside your door or in your room and expect it to be picked up. It won't be.How does having laundry done at a hotel work?
You can give it to the housekeeper or the front desk.

    It is very convenient:

you hand in a bag of dirty laundry

    and it comes back clean.

Usually it will be delivered to your room.

    BUT ...

you pay through the nose for that convenience,

    like $2 / pair of socks, $3 / t-shirt, etc.

Pricing will be on a par with the hotel.

A more expensive hotel will charge more

than a cheaper one, even if they are sending

it to the same laundry down the street.

  • What are the requirements to rent a hotel room?

My girlfriend and I want to go to Wisconsin Dells in December for our anniversery. I'm 18 and shes 17, and I've never rented a room before. Do you need a credt card or some other things? Can anyone help me out? What are the requirements to rent a hotel room?
It completely depends on the hotel/motel, but nowadays, it's hard to find a place that doesn't require a credit card. However, you should be okay with a pre-paid credit card or a debit card. Also, smaller mom-and-pops (who still trust everyone) and/or sketchy places (who rent by the hour) will take cash or checks (ahead of time to make sure the money is there).

I'd also recommend making a reservation, since it'll make the whole process easier. Here's a website with a bunch of hotels/motels/B%26amp;Bs/etc for Wisconsin Dells: http://www.dells.com/index2.html If the hotel has a website, they'll usually give you quite a few details as well (i.e. cancellation policies, credit card policies, etc).

Also, they'll ask to see your ID, in case you trash the room and since most won't rent to anyone under 18 (I don't think they'd ask to see your girlfriend's ID, but just in case, I'd have her sit out in the car while you're getting the key from the front desk). What are the requirements to rent a hotel room?
Most of the time you need a credit card. I've stayed in a few places that took cash. When you call to book the room ask them first if they will take some other sort of payment besides a credit or debit card. A lot of them need a credit card to hold a room since you can't pay with cash over the phone.
Most places require a credit card, debit cards work fine as well.
Most places do require a credit card to guarantee your reservation. Your best bet is to call in to make the reservation and ask them if you can send a check for guarantee -- some hotels still allow you to do that.
    yes.....I can help..try this site www.vrbo.com

rent owner direct. you will not need a credit card and will rent owner direct. You will never see the owner Some owners require you to be 21 or 25 but Like i said they mail you the keys...

Just don't party there...Does Her mom know she is going???

No really this is a great site..
The primary requirement at most motels or hotels is legal id.

Secondary as some of the other users have pointed out is a credit or debit card.

My advise would be to plan ahead and contact the hotel your planning at with and ask them what there requirements are.

Planning ahead also assures they will have a room available for you.

Is it easy to find a vacant hotel room at Yellowstone national park during summer?

    hi guys

I am planning to visit the Yellowstone national park in the US this summer probably the end of June...

So since I have never been there before, I am wondering is it easy to find a vacant hotel or motel room during summer???

or should i reserve rooms right now?

thanks! Is it easy to find a vacant hotel room at Yellowstone national park during summer?
You will be visiting Yellowstone during the busy season, so you should make reservations as soon as possible. The park gets busy by Memorial Day and stays crowded until Labor Day. Avoid these two holiday weekends as well as July 4th. I've stayed at the Gray Wolf Inn and the Yellowstone Park Hotel in West Yellowstone. Both are decent places to stay and reasonably priced for the season. They are both less than a 1/2 mile from the park entrance. I've attached links for you. If you want to stay in the park, check out the 3rd link below. It is the site for Xanterra, the park concessionaire that runs all of the hotels, restaurants and gift shops in the park.

You will love Yellowstone. Is it easy to find a vacant hotel room at Yellowstone national park during summer?
I went to Yellowstone a few years ago. We found a hotel room just outside of the park. If you want to stay at a hotel inside of the park you better make reservations because there's not many hotels in the park.
Having lived in Wyoming for several years and visited the park numerous times I cay say that reservations do fill quickly in the park. Thus the sooner the better.

Here is a link to view.

Now you can usually get lodging outside of the park. Cody and Jackson WY are nice places to stay. .

What is the biggest difference between a hotel and a motel?

By hotel I mean anything from really small to really big.

And by motel I mean something that doesn't rent rooms by the hour. (motel 6 or super 8 motel for example)

We're visiting California this summer and have most of our lodging figured out, but for a few days we still need to find something.

Preferably not too expensive, hence my question :)

Are motels always cheaper and less well maintained than hotels?

Are motels sleazy places one should avoid? What is the biggest difference between a hotel and a motel?
The answers to your last two questions are no and no. You cannot generalize about prices, degree of upkeep or cleanliness about motels and hotels. Some motels are very well maintained and clean while some hotels can be run down and sleazy.

You can generalize about the following though:

    1. Most motels are older and not parts of a national chain. National chains (systems) do not name their lodging facilities ';motels'; any more simply, I gather, to avoid the misunderstanding such as raised in your questions.

    2. Most motels are near a highway or a main road. However, this is to be taken with the understanding that what used to be a highway may have been replaced by a newer highway and is now just a road through town.

Since you sound like you may be from another country, I'd advise to make reservation with a national chain to assure a certain level of quality (Holiday Inn, La Quinta, Hilton, Sheraton, Marriott...). You can find reasonable rates through those chains as they have different levels of hotels but at least, you know in advance what you're going to get. Individually-owned hotels and motels can vary so widely in quality you can never be sure. What is the biggest difference between a hotel and a motel?
~~ Motel 6 doesn't rent rooms by the hour, it's overnight or longer.

    ~~ From: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hotel

A hotel is an establishment that provides paid lodging, usually on a short-term basis.

Hotels often provide a number of additional guest services such as a restaurant, a swimming pool or childcare.

Hotels differ from motels in that most motels have drive-up, exterior entrances to the rooms, while hotels tend to have interior entrances to the rooms, which may increase guests' safety and present a more upmarket image.

~~ Being an Aussie I think of a Hotel as an establishment that sells beer (true, they have an internal staircase that leads up to rooms for short term accomodation).

I consider a Motel to be accommodation that you drive up to, your car handily parked just ouside the door.

Many of the national motel chains are located right next to a restaurant too.

~~ Nor are motels sleazy places best avoided, certainly not the national chains anyhow.

We did a seven week tour of the entire USA, staying 90% of the time at Motel 6, so be nice!

The rooms are cleaned daily, we never once had complaints about cleanliness or freshness of any linen items.

The odd occassion we stayed at a privately owned motel, some of those are best avoided!

~~ Unsure about the price comparison between hotels and motels, I wouldn't stay at a hotel.

Just do a search for Californian hotels/motels, you'll get thousands of hits.

Many sites have personal reviews, photos of the hotel/motel and the rooms. And you just make a reservation online.
Motel allows you to enter your room from the parking lot, with your car parked outside the door. It is usually single level.

A hotel has to be entered through the lobby. It is multilevel.

Motels do not have to be 'sleazy'. There are quite a few that are upscale. You can save money by avoiding chain run hotels/motels and staying at ones that are family run. The drawback is that there are fewer amenities and no overall quality control.

You can do a quick assessment of a property by visiting the tripadvisor site and see how customers have rated it compared to others in the vicinity.

  • What is a nice yet kid friendly hotel to stay in in Chicago?

We are going in the middle of December so we'd like a nice place to come back to. A pool would be nice but we need it affordable too. We would also like it located near some popular sights.

Any suggestions? What is a nice yet kid friendly hotel to stay in in Chicago?
We stayed at the Homewood Suites on Grand Avenue, it was really great. All rooms are suites, there's a small pool with a city view, it's a family friendly hotel, it's just a block from Michigan Avenue and two blocks from State Street, and it's really affordable ($129/night last december with complimentary breakfast and a light evening meal). It's highly recommended on tripadvisor (number 5 or 6).

Just checked on tripadvisor it's number 3 now! What is a nice yet kid friendly hotel to stay in in Chicago?
We stayed at the Embassy Suites on State street about 3 years ago (2 girls aged 11, mymom and I). They have a pool (small but OK), great breakfast ad manager reception, very well located to sites and transportation. I think we paid $200/night but that was in the height of the summer

Parking at the hotel is very expensive so look for a nearby lot

If you want cheaper I heard the Best Western was basic but good (with free parking in case you are driving)

What is important to have in a Hotel Website when booking online?

I am re-doing our website at work and it's my first time. What tops the list as most important to travelers when they are booking on-line? What do you always look for? What attracts you to a certain hotel without visiting it yet? What is important to have in a Hotel Website when booking online?
    I always look for these

    (1) Location. Its helpful to have a map to see where the hotel is acutally located. I hate upon hate when going to a new city and trying to find a hotel trying to work out where it is in relation to other things. It would be nice to know when they say ';only 1 mile from Downtown' that you have to pay $20 in a cab as it is not walkable (unless you like crossing major highways)... I hate that...lol. So situation, transport links and parking info are a must. Another pet peeve is when a website says On-site parking is available at the hotel and then you turn up to be told that indeed it is available and its $25 per day!!!! It would be nice to know that before I book.

    (2) Photos. It has to look nice

    (3) Customer Reviews. I use this as my basis to stay in any hotel. Its good if you have them on the site but if not i'll go to www.tripadvisor.com anyway

    (4) Good website. If the website is crappy then its obvious the hotel or hotel chain aren't putting too much money into it and if they aren't investing in the website and reservation system then chances are they aren't investing in anything else to do with the hotel

Hope this helps. What is important to have in a Hotel Website when booking online?

What is the meaning of the song Hotel California?

I just heard Hotel California by the Eagles on the radio and I'm curious to hear everyone's interpretation of what the message of the song is. Would anyone like to break it down for me?What is the meaning of the song Hotel California?
Some people say it's a reference to a drug rehab center. Some say it's related to the church of Anton LaVey. Don Henley himself was vague when asked the question years ago. Here's a list of commonly told ideas:

    (1) The Hotel California is a real hotel located in (pick one) Baja California on the coastal highway between Cabo San Lucas and La Paz or else near Santa Barbara. In other words, the song is a hard look at the modern hospitality industry, which is plagued by guests who ';check out any time [they] like'; but then ';never leave.';

    (2) The Hotel California is a mental hospital. I see one guy on the Web has identified it as ';Camarillo State Hospital in Ventura County between LA and Santa Barbara.';

    (3) It's about satanism. Isn't everything?

    (4) Hotel California is a metaphor for cocaine addiction. See ';You can check out any time you like but you can never leave.'; This comes from the published comments of Glenn Frey, one of the coauthors.

    (5) It's about the pitfalls of living in southern California in the 1970s, my interpretation since first listen. Makes perfect sense, and goddammit, who you going to believe, some ignorant rock star or me?

    (6) My fave, posted to the Usenet by Thomas Dzubin of Vancouver, British Columbia: ';There was this fireworks factory just three blocks from the Hotel California . . . and it blew up! Big tragedy. One of the workers was named Wurn Snell and he was from the town of Colitas in Greece. One of the workers who escaped the explosion talked to another guy . . . I think it was probably Don Henley . . . and Don asked what the guy saw. The worker said, ';Wurn Snell of Colitas . . . rising up through the air.';What is the meaning of the song Hotel California?
I think that this song simply refers to Hell, and a man's account of how he got there and what it was like.

The song starts out by telling how he dies...car wreck, something like that.

The woman who is so tempting is sin...thus she shows the way to Hell.

Let's say you check into a hotel and present a valid credit card with Id and stay for one night.

The next morning you leave the hotel at 5am and don't pay or check out and take a cab to the airport.

When you get to the airport at 5:30am you call your credit card company and tell them you lost your credit card.

Sounds like an excellent way to get another ';free'; stay at taxpayer expense after you get charged with credit card fraud too. The hotel will bill your card and you will be liable for the amount regardless. Because you checked in with a valid credit card you gave the hotel authority to charge that card, even though you reported it stolen. The hotel will contact the credit card company and let them know what you did and the credit card company will hold you responsible.
Hotels take pre authorization on your card for the amount of your room charge and often even more to cover room service etc. What this means is that they ';book'; this amount of credit on your account and are therefore covered even if you cancel the card later.
That's fraud, buddy. You presented your id, you think they can't find you? Very intelligent.

If you call after that time, we will get what is call a charge back that's when things start going down hill for you. We send the credit card company the proof of the transaction ie(copy of imprint, swipe info collected, footage of the transaction on camera etc). They then give us the money, from there it goes to their fraud and risk department. They may raise the rate on your card as you now show a higher risk or if they are understandably upset they may transfer your problem to the feds for follow up, depending on size of bill. The feds are in on it because transaction mostly likely crossed at least one state line.

Enjoy your trip its most likely the one you be having for some time.

Do this too many times with one hotel chain will get you on the black list where you never be able to book a room with that chain.

What is the best and safest hotel in Boston?

Also, what hotel is closest to most of the things to see and do? I would be walking a lot. Is there a bus tour to Salem from Boston? What is the best and safest hotel in Boston?
Any hotel in the Back Bay area is both nice and safe, as well as expensive. Generally speaking, Back Bay is the area between Boston Common and Fenway along Boylston, Newbury, Commonwealth Avenues.

The other area of interest is the water front, again generally speaking the Faneuil Hall area.

If you want to see historical stuff, walk the freedom trail etc... a hotel around Faneuil Hall would be best. If you want to go shopping, see shows, etc.. Back Bay.

There is a trolley tour and duck boat tours. Don't know if either goes to Salem (I doubt it), but you can take public transportation (a.k.a. the T) to Salem from Boston. Look up MBTA on the www.

What do they look for to hire someone as their hotel manager? I am 17 and this is my goal. What school should be my goal? How many years of experience do I need in the industry and how much will I get paid if I did get the job in the future? Thanks for the help! What do I NEED to be a hotel manager in a prestigious Hotel such as the Marriot Hotel in Manhattan?
You will need a post highschool education. Where you go to school depends on you...your grades, location, etc. What you will make depends on location.

You should get an entry level job now at the front desk, cleaning, etc. of a hotel. Start at the bottom and work your way up. Find a mentor at the hotel whose job aligns with what you want to do in the future. Let them know your aspirations and ask them your questions. Often times if your employer knows you are interested in aspiring to great things, they will be more willing to invest in you.

Good Luck. What do I NEED to be a hotel manager in a prestigious Hotel such as the Marriot Hotel in Manhattan?
You need a degree in Hospitality Management (often offered through Faculties of Business). Then, you'll need to work your way up the hotel ladder (probably within the same hotel or chain). While you're going to university and/or working, you'll wan to pump up your resume by taking extra courses and gaining additional credentials (for example, a certificate in Event Planning). See the links below for the type of program you would be looking for. Read each program description carefully, as they're both very different. In terms of experience, it would probably be around ten years before you were considered for a GM position. Your salary would be around $90,000, depending on the size of the hotel, the location and your responsibilities. For salary info you can always consult the third link.
for a hotel..you would need above a high school degree....first go into a hotel and find the highest position you can find...if you cannot.......go find another job......a job that pays low or average...but requires alot of work.....then work at that job for a year or two.....the basics of what you are doing is showing that you have a ';just do it'; attitude.....you keep going like the energizer bunny.....regardless of high pay or low pay.......and then once you have some experience....apply for a position in the hotell......dont go for the lower jobs like cleaning, or guys that open doors for people...etcetc....try the front desk or manager of...etc etc...and as you work....show them a no quit attitude...and ask them about schooling....for hotel and restaraunt management....this is the basics of where to start....after that..its all up to you.....but....your first year will pay you like Sh$$t....but...once first year is over....and u survive....or you do good......you will be eligible for a 50-60k contract....do search around as they do have some hotels that acccept candidates for management ....who do not have degrees past high school degrees....
Good for you that you have your goals and plans laid out in advance. Like everything it is all about experience, education and contacts. BE the best at what yo do, even at a small town hotel, then you build your resume and contacts (NEVER BURN BRIDGES) and one day you'll reach your goal. GODSPEED! Now go make it happen! Tell me in ten years when you have reached your goal.

How can you get a lower hotel rate in person?

I don't like the online sites like Priceline because they don't tell you what hotel you are getting until you've already agreed to purchase it. Is there anything you can say to the hotel clerk to get a lower rate? I'm interested in Hilton. How can you get a lower hotel rate in person?
Show up after their reserved check in time. Any rooms available will probably go empty, these are the ones you can get a deal on. Do like shatner does on the commercial, tell the clerk you are there last minute, do they have any special room rates. Be sure to check their normal rates(rack rates) are so you know if you are getting a deal. If it's not low enough, hesitate. Be sure to bring along your AAA card, and when they get down to a rate you like, whip it out for a possible extra bit off. Also be sure to check the hotel you plan to visit to see if they have rooms available that day, if they are pretty booked (since you mentioned hilton) they may not let even a few empty rooms go cheaply.

You know the hiltons sold their hotel yeah? How can you get a lower hotel rate in person?
i'm a good friend of paris hilton's. we met in jail and i kept her butt from getting kicked by other inmates. she told me that when i get out, she'll repay the favor by giving me a free night in her daddy's hotels.

so apparently morgan from below tells me they sold the hotel. i knew you shouldn't trust that skank of a person named paris!

How weird is to pay a hotel room in cash?

My company is going to send me on a business trip. There is some inconvenience with the company's credit card so they will give me like a thousand dollars cash to pay for the entire week I am planning to stay at the Crown Plaza. Will the hotel staff become suspicious of me? How common is to pay hotel rooms in cash nowadays? How weird is to pay a hotel room in cash?
People pay for cash all of the time for hotel rooms these days. However, at most hotels it becomes a big production. You may need a deposit etc. And lets just say alot of people who pay cash are ';watched'; by a certain ';group'; if you know what i mean. Alot of people that pay cash where i work are dealers, pimps, prostitutes, etc. If you want to avoid alot of trouble as far as deposits and such, take one of your own credit cards to put down for incidentals. Or talk to your company and have them reimburse you if you pay on your credit card. Just some thoughtsHow weird is to pay a hotel room in cash?
There is no law that says you cannot do it, I have paid hotels in cash in the past. The problem may be that many hotels require a credit card to cover potential incidentals, they keep the number in file. Check in advance with the hotel to see how to go about this to avoid unpleasant last minute surprises. If you are not going to use hotel services, you may give your own credit card, just to keep the number in file, telling NOT to charge the room there.

    Bon voyage!

    Cheers,
I always pay cash, even though I reserve with my credit card. No sense in racking up interest if there's no need to. Any business prefers cash, it's no biggie! Have a good time by the way! Crown Plaza....NICE!
No suspicision.....just make the bills are legit...

i pay cash for hotels all the time
My company has a similar situation. I have found it increasingly difficult to pay for hotels with cash. In this regard the financial world has gone mad! In fact many hotels will not accept cash period. In a few cases like in NYC where nearly all hotels require a credit card, I have had to stay at a motel 6 in New Jersey because no matter how much $ you have no one else will rent you a room in that area. Seattle is a bit more relaxed, though you may need to stay at a less upscale place to use cash.
No, carrying $1,000 around courtesy of your ';bosses'; for ';business'; is not shady at all.
It's very common. I always pay in cash.
most places require a credit card to rent a room. yes they may be suspicious of you if you try to pay in cash..
They will take it but will probably require a credit card on file anyway.
You are asking for trouble - carrying so much Cash.

Buy Traveller's checks or put the money in a Bank and use checks.
It's not weird at all. But the problem is that all the hotels are asking you for your credit card just in case you took a garbage can or something from the hotel. and they'll charge you.
i used to pay cash in my younger days when i'd take my woman over there
Hotel won't care......They will just expect lots of cash tips, however. I'd be more concerned about you employers credit!
    who cares
It's less common in the higher end hotels, but not unheard of. Make sure you have a valid photo ID as they will need a copy of that. You may have difficulties with amenities and room service, but those can be worked out. The staff will not become suspicious of you unless you behave strangely.
It is not the payment of choice ANYWHERE anymore- people charge everything from cars to gum so it will be a little odd but the only hangup I see for you is that they will not give you any ';credit'; meaning you won't be able to have room service, use the phone, buy a movie without using a credit card at the front desk---you can give them your private one and tell them you will be paying in cash-- that way your card will be the ';backup'; and allow you to charge things to the room and when you check out- you pay cash.........something fishy is going on with your business by the way.......have a safe trip
i dont think its weird at all. especially if you explained the situation. you could always deposit the $ in your bank and pay w/ your credit card if youre that worried about it.
they might ask for a credit card just so that they can hold someone responsible if u do some thing like take the tv. or some thing like that so take ur card and save the money to pay for the bill. and save all the recipts.
i would deposit the money in my bank account and use my check card.
It's a lot more common than you think, cheating spouses will pay in cash to keep the charge off of their card! I have paid for hotels all around the world with cash, they just require you to give a credit card number up front for the room. There is nothing suspicious about paying in cash, relax and go enjoy yourself.
The desk is used to cash, it is not common, but yet it is frequent enough to be readily acceptable. Some brands, cash is seen more often than others, regardless of the brand though, cash is readily acceptable. HOWEVER...beware some hotels require a credit card, not many, my guess your hotel no...but you should check to be sure.

It is not too uncommon for a company to give an advance for an employee trip. For sheer liability reasons, they should allow an alternate method than cash (what if you get mugged because someone notice your bundle). The company may ';expect'; most employees to have credit card or bank accounts where they can deposit the advance and then travel with personal credit or debit cards. BUT...you can always safely easily send an ';advance deposit'; to the hotel, which is also frequently accepted by hotels. Just send a check in advance, most hotels accept checks ONLY when an advance deposit is given X days prior to arrival. Again, check hotel policy on advance deposit, but that is much safer than carrying cash!!

Can I get better hotel deals in Vegas by just showing up at those hotels and not pre-booking?

I heard the hotels have a high vacancy rate and that if you just show up and ask for their best deal, it's better than any pre-booked deals. Is this true? Can I get better hotel deals in Vegas by just showing up at those hotels and not pre-booking?
Never happen. You need to set it in advance.

Best wishes. Can I get better hotel deals in Vegas by just showing up at those hotels and not pre-booking?
I would find and book a hotel room in advance at the rate you find that looks reasonable to you...note the cancellation policy of that hotel. Then, on the day of, I'd walk into a few hotels and see if I could get a better deal. You will be walking the strip anyways, why not just drop in and ask. Another way to get a deal is to ask if the hotel has any rooms on maintenance that they'd be willing to give you at a discount. Maybe there's a room without a TV in it or something like that. If I did get a better deal then I would cancel my other booking (following their cancellation policy). You're covered both ways.

Yes, sometimes hotels do have same day deals, and sometimes the discounts can be very deep. Most of the time these are caused by an event or group canceling or the hotel over-estimating the demand for that day. Hotels forecast their occupancy out weeks to months in advance. If there is a day or days where they will significantly miss their projections, you can bet that they'll want to put you in a room and in a hurry.
No Go through a travel agency or book online for a package deal

    One thing to remember

    Investigate the hotel completely.

You can get some lousy hotels with packages, way off the strip.

Google the hotel online and look at it, and the location before putting any money down.

You can play around with this, to get some ideas.

    http://www.travelocity.com/
How would you be able to compare? It is batter to book in advance especially in Vegas. Years ago they use to advertise rooms on the big screen TVs in front of the hotels rooms at discount prices for that night only but they don't anymore.
Booking online in advance is the best way to get the best rates. Book directly with your desired hotel in order to get the best rate. In addition check http://www.vegas-hotels-online.com - it has the latest hotel promo codes available which will lower your room price.

What do you think of a hotel survey card that only wants positive feedback?

It says you can earn future stay discounts and employees get rewarded with points with positive feedback. That's like bribery. That is not an honest survey, Some people will lie just to save money. This is coming from a chain motel I stayed at but don't know if all the motels in this chain are following same practice.Let me know what you think. What do you think of a hotel survey card that only wants positive feedback?
Clever Marketing. It sucks, but it's clever. What do you think of a hotel survey card that only wants positive feedback?
The future stay discounts will apply if you fill the survey out...positive or negative. The hotel wants feedback, and one way to get it is to offer something to you in exchange for your time. If you do happen to give positive feedback on the card the employee(s) mentioned will get rewarded. That doesn't mean you have to give positive feedback if your stay was less than positive, it just means that any employee that gets recognized by you will also be recognized by the company.

When checking into a hotel how much does a hotel usually put on your credit card?

I primarily use my debit card when paying for stuff. I do have a credit card but I was wondering how much do they(the hotel) actually puts on hold. When checking into a hotel how much does a hotel usually put on your credit card?
    First answer is wrong.

They take the firsts night stay (plus tax on it). That its. The rest of the stay is charged when you arrive.

So for example if you are staying Friday-Tuesday, they will take Friday nights rate and add the 9% tax, and charge that to your card. You can always get that back as long as you cancel typically 2 or 3 days before your expected check in.When checking into a hotel how much does a hotel usually put on your credit card?
I have a trip to Las Vegas booked on Expedia. It lists in the hotel information that you will be charged $100 per night per person on your credit card for incidentals, and each person in the room must have a card in their own name to have the $100 per night charged. They just reserve the funds on your card, but don't actually charge it until you check out in case you have room service charges, cleaning charges, spa charges, etc. The funds will be released when you check out. If you need the money available on your debit card, then just put it on a credit card, because the funds won't be available on your debit card until a day or two after you get home. If you go to your hotels website, you may find what they charge listed there. Or at least a phone number to call and ask. Basically, all the major hotels on the strip are going to have the same charge.
When you make a reservation on line the charge a deposit, usually somewhere around $80. It is usually refundable if you cancel more than 24 hours prior to arrival unless you got a discount that specified it there was a cancellation penalty. When you check in they check your credit card and reserve the price of the room each day plus another 100 dollars if needed. As soon as you settle your bill all reserved charges are freed. So, if you check in with a credit card it is all invisible to you, that is, unless you are already close to being maxed out.

    *
Depends on the hotel, most hold it for the first night's amount only and then you have the option to use a different method later on or end of your stay.

Some hotels don't even charge anything until you arrive and that amount may vary.
The average for all Neveda Casinos is 100.00 per night according the hotel association of Neveda.
They imprint your credit card and charge it upon your checkout, not usually before. They put at least the first night on the card and then each day add a day.
Generally an amount equal to your expected stay plus some for potential food and other charges.
They will tell you but at my hotel the total was around 350 and they put $81 on my card when I booked it

What is the cheapest non-dirty hotel within driving distance to Disneyland?

I am planning a one day trip to Disneyland and I would like to find the cheapest hotel that is within a 30 minute or so drive to the park. If the hotel is gross and dirty I wouldnt be interested in it. I am looking to only spend $50 or less for the one night. I am coming from San Francisco so it would be preferred if the hotel were north of Disneyland. Thanks! What is the cheapest non-dirty hotel within driving distance to Disneyland?
Save the fifty bucks and sleep in your car

..What is the cheapest non-dirty hotel within driving distance to Disneyland?
The only hotel you'll find for under $50 that's not crummy and dirty is the Fantasyland Hotel. Tell them that Walt sent you.

Average price down here for a decent place is $100 per night. Try looking at ';America's Best Value Inn'; in Anaheim, or search for a hotel in Buena Park. Those tend to be cheaper. Good luck.
There aren't any hotels here for that price that aren't nests for roaches, dirt, and bedbugs. Price for an average hotel is $100. And since 30 minutes only gets you about 10 miles in LA traffic, that narrow an impossible task even further. Let me ask you this: Could you do the same for me if I wanted to stay within 30 minutes of downtown SF for under $50?

If you must, then try the ';America's Best Value Inn'; on Beach Blvd near I-5. Cheap, nothing fancy, and about a 10 minute drive from Disneyland.
for that price you would have to look for a hostel instead of a motel or hotel....

you wont find any in the $50.00 not in southern California

  • How can i go from my hotel inside disney to universal studios? is there any public transportation?

I am planning to go to Orlando on a vacation trip on april 2007, and i want to know the best and cheapest way to reach the attractions that are not inside disney麓s limits. How can i go from my hotel inside disney to universal studios? is there any public transportation?
Rent a car. Disney property is about 7 miles on the outskirts of Orlando. The only way to get anywhere else (SeaWorld, Universal, downtown Orlando, etc.) is either drive or take a taxi. You'll save money by renting a car...How can i go from my hotel inside disney to universal studios? is there any public transportation?
Rent a car. Public transit is a joke in almost all of Florida. Especially in Orlando. Sorry.
There are many options for getting from Universal to Disney. I would suggest Bethany Transport. They are a local company and very convenient too. You can schedule to be picked up and dropped of at specific times (more convenient than a cab and you know they will be there when you requested!) Depending on the size of your party, you can get a van or regular car.

If you call, ask for Goldie!! She is super nice! Their number is 407-239-8111.

Mears is also another good company. They are the company that runs all of the Disney Transportation. (That is why you always see them on Disney property). We drive by the Mears lot in downtown Orlando and see Disney cruise line buses and other Disney transport buses in their lot. They might be a little more expensive, but worth checking out.
If you are planning to leave Disney property for only one or two days, it would be cheaper to take a taxi or shuttle.

However, depending upon the number of people in your group, and the number of days you wish to visit ';off-property'; attractions, it could wind up cheaper to rent a car.

For example: 6 people want to leave property on 3 days. taking the shuttle at $10 per person, that is $60 per day x 3 days = $180. You might be able to get a rental car for cheaper than that.
LJRobbie (who was answering a question I asked about Disney / Universal) just wrote to me that you can get a shuttle from Disney to Universal for $10.00. I don't have any details though.
I was also going to suggest Mears. They'll take you to just about any of the Parks in the Orlando area. Beside that, take a taxi. It's quicker, not crowded, and cool (A/C works unlike in some shuttle buses.) And taxis are always just waiting outside of the Walt Disney World Resorts.

But here's the link for Mears, I'm sure it'd be much cheaper than a taxi...

    http://www.mearstransportation.com/Shutt鈥?/a>
Call mears transportation which provides cabs, buses, shuttles, and limos all over Orlando and is very reputable. You can find them online. They are always on Disney and Universal property.

DON'T TRY TO RELY ON THE CITY BUS!!!

What is important when choosing a hotel for business visitors?

Can you send me the reson when you choose and example ? . Thanks everybodyWhat is important when choosing a hotel for business visitors?
    1. proximity to business event is very important.

    2. Cleanliness/class of hotel. Business travelers are not going to be happy about staying in a slum.

    3. Price. Hotel for most business travelers should be moderately priced. Especially if the traveler works for a cheap *** company like mine that requires the employee to pay up front then wait for reimbursement.

    4. Must have wifi

    5. Must be reasonably quiet. A popular hotel for spring break partiers is not the best place for a business traveler during spring break.

How do we find the best hotel rates for interline travel?

My daughter recently became a flight attendant for Alaska Airlines and we are trying to educate ourselves on interline travel. Is there a web site that most airline employees use? ID90.com is one website. They charge a yearly fee. perx.com has a lot of hotel and cruise deals for interliners. You can also subrscribe to OAG travel guide. Most airlines have employee webistes with some hotel discounts but I'm not sure about Alaska Air. Sometimes in a foreign country I will just walk around and ask the locals but ignore their first answers because they will direct you to the places where the rest of the Americans are staying. Hotel renovation, work carried out on weekends? contractors invovled should be known to the public?

When a hotel is closed for renovation, are they actually allowed to carry out the renovation work on saturdays and sundays? What are the days and time that they are actually allowed to carry out the work?

When hotels are carrying out renovation / refurbishment, are they supposed to put up a sign board indicating the contractor, contact numbers, etc? If not, whom should we report to? If residence around the neighbourhood encounter some problems, e.g. fire alarm of the hotel ringing non-stop, who should the the residence contact?Hotel renovation, work carried out on weekends? contractors invovled should be known to the public?
In the US, they're almost certainly being paid bonuses to work weekends. Because the hotel wants the job done as fast as possible. Depending on the area they're in, they are probably banned from doing loud work like jackhammering in the night, but there's no reason at all that quieter work can't go on 24/7. Although usually the work is no more than 12 hours a day.

When the job site is open, there will be some sort of office/trailer onsite with a person who works for the general contractor. If an alarm goes off at night though, you may have to wait until morning to have it dealt with... the police don't have the authority to go in there and smash things up just to shut them up. Since it's a renovation job though, the hotel fire alarms should already be tied to a security company and/or the local fire station, who should come out and investigate any alarms.Hotel renovation, work carried out on weekends? contractors invovled should be known to the public?
only if your area has noise ordinances, then you can call the police non-emergency number in your town. otherwise, they can work anytime of the day or night. Hotels are usually in areas zoned commercial, not residential. Call your city hall and inquire with them..
IF I had a nonstop fire alarm at a building near where I live, I would call the Police!

How do I get a decent hotel reservation for mardi gras in new orleans?

I thought I was starting early enough by looking now, but all the french quarter hotels are either booked or you have to stay there for a certain number of nights. Is there a secret to getting into one of these places? Or should I just go to a travel agent and see what they can come up with? Also, if I do end up in a hotel that isn't walking distance, is it realistic to think that I will be able to take a cab to bourbon street and then back home? How do I get a decent hotel reservation for mardi gras in new orleans?
During all festival weekends I think most hotels require a minimum 3 night stay (some 2) and rates go up. I would think you can still find some good hotels or B%26amp;Bs in the quarter although the ones right at canal might be harder. I would not recommend catching a cab though. Most of the streets are blocked off and its very hard to get around in a car during peak parade hours. You will walk faster than a car could go. I come to town often and always stay at Maison DuBois Bed and breakfast. Its walkable to the parades on Canal, 1 block from bourban but on the other end of the quarter so gives you a chance to relax and get away from the crowds too. They have a wonderful saltwater pool/spa and tropical courtyard too which is great. Nice large suites too. Here is their site. Good luck.

http://www.maisondubois.net/How do I get a decent hotel reservation for mardi gras in new orleans?
there are plenty places to stay for mardi gras,in the city and suburbs.how long are you coming for and whats your budget like?

I'll give you all the info if you need ,send me an email with the dates that you need.don't wait too long or the prices will go up,I deal with some people who rent out apartments and rooms, and do work with the convention center.

if you're coming with a group let me know how many.
If you want something a little different, stay in Metairie.

There are parades almost every evening for two weeks, including some big ones close to Mardi Gras day.

Look on a map for Causeway Blvd and I-10.
You need to get reservations several years in advance.
Yes, most hotels downtown DO require at least a 3-night minimum stay for the week-end before Mardi Gras. The streets to the heart of the French Quarter have restricted access during that time. No, if you are not staying within walking distance of the Quarter, you will NOT be able to take a cab to Bourbon Street because of crowds and the parades coming to Canal St. There are no major parades that go thru the Quarter. Your best bet to getting around is on foot because a lot of streets will be blocked due to all the parades. Street blocking starts 2 hours before and goes until 2 hours after parades. St. Charles Avenue and Canal Street are the parade routes. The parades will start on St. Charles and head to Canal St.

You can try staying in a bed and breakfast; you might have better luck. Here's a website to check out: www.HistoricLodging.com. and there is the St. Charles Guest House, located on Prytania Street, close to downtown and one block from St. Charles. www.stcharlesguesthouse.com If you want to stay in the French Quarter, you will pay a premium rate during the climax of Carnival season, and just a little warning--YOU WILL NOT GET THE REAL MARDI GRAS EXPERIENCE IN THE FRENCH QUARTER.
    book years in advance--literally

    --good luck
The only way you're gonna get lucky is if you go really cheap, or extremly pricey.

Or if you just have an Uncle thats works at one of the best hotels in the French Quarter like me!
Try www.priorityclub.com - the website for Holiday Inn. They show vacancies for several properties downtown, including hotels in the French Quarter. They also don't seem to have an advance purchase requirement or a minimum stay requirement. That will probably change as MG approaches.

Last MG, I stayed at the Staybridge Suites (Poydras Street) which is in the city center about 2 blocks from the Saint Charles Avenue parade route and about 4 blocks from Canal Street (a boundary of the French Quarter). It was not cheap but I did not have to pay in advance or buy a minimum number of nights.

nolajazzyguide is right and no parades go through the FQ. MG is also much more than just Bourbon Street. However, staying at a hotel in the FQ or CBD is really convenient as you can use the hotel as a base and walk everywhere.

Check http://www.mardigras.com/ for more info on MG in New Orleans.
you are lucky if you get a reservation. People are booked since lastyear. Good Luck!
i think you should register a year or more earlier than when you plan to go

Why is it important for the hotel鈥檚 maintenance department to keep the blades of the hotel鈥檚 lawn mowers sharp?

    1. The engines of the lawn mowers will run smoother if the blades are kept sharp.

    2. The blades are less likely to warp or crack if they are kept sharp.

    3. If the blades are sharp, the grass is cut, not ripped, and is therefore less susceptible to disease.

    4. If the blades are sharp, the lawn mowers will use less gas.Why is it important for the hotel鈥檚 maintenance department to keep the blades?
I think it would be 3, maybe 4.

.. I'm not sure about the ';disease'; part, but sharp blades mean the grass is cut properly. Also if they're sharp it will use less gas because some spots won't need to be mowed repeatedly. Why is it important for the hotel鈥檚 maintenance department to keep the blades?
if they are kept sharp then any cracks will be found , before they fly off and rip somones head off, health and safety
