What is the customary way to tip hotel staff?

Does it vary based on the quality of the hotel? Do you tip a certain percentage of your overall bill like you do in a restaurant, or is it a flat rate per day?

Also, do hotel staff earn a small base wage that takes tips into consideration, or are they paid a full, normal wage and just keep tips as a bonus?

When answering, please list your country. :)What is the customary way to tip hotel staff?
UK.

We don't tip. Simple as.What is the customary way to tip hotel staff?
whenever i go a hotel, i try to leave $5 on my bedside table and i always get great service. they appreciate it and i usually get special treatment for such a small gesture. if you were staying more then a few days, i wouldn't do it every time the staff visits your room, simply because it can get quite expensive :) if you get room service, same thing. if room service is a treat and doesn't happen a lot, give them $5 and if you ever order it again, they will, more likely than not, remember and get your order to you in a timely fashion.

i'm a canadian!
All the things mentioned by you regarding the waiter tips depends upon the star of the hotel and the country you are in .

In most big star hotels the standard tip is 10% for your bill.

Yes in some hotels do pay less pay so that the waiter collects tips, which add up to some good amount. Now a days of the rescission most of the customers only pay 5%
i'm from canada.. i tried to find emily post's opinion but all i could find was from 1922 where a quarter was the minimum lol.

good housekeeping has an etiquette person though with an article on tipping at a hotel:

I only tip upon leaving incase they mess up after I tipped. I would pay 拢1 per person that was outstanding in their service. It may sound mean but they squeeze enough out of the bill as it is.
