Join their frequent traveler programs, like Hyatt Gold Passport, etc. Become a member of AAA - you can get discounts by using your card. Also, call a hotel and book a room. Then call another hotel nearby and tell them what you got the first room for. Often times, they will lower their rate. Then call the first hotel back and tell them what you got the second one for. They will sometimes try to compete and lower theirs as well. I do this for my job all the time.
